Life Is strange Episode 4 Dark Room Byte Sized Review

Do you think I'm Spooky?

Life is Strange started out in episode one feeling like a teen drama,  just with a lot more 'hella' than your average day contains. Now though, it's grown into a hugely impactful experience, taking on real issues of depression and suicide, in a mature and rarely respectful way. Episode Four is equally emotionally powerful and thought-provoking, questioning the morals of Max but also the player. My eyes were consistently moist, it made me an emotional wreck but don't tell anyone.... Or else. Unfortunately odd dialogue pops up at inopportune times like that uncle you hate, though it has improved since episode one (unlike that uncle), even humorously self-referenced. Shallow characters show their complexities, like life; people are more than outer appearances. The pacing never lets go, we hardly have time to contemplate the doom that's lurking towards Arcadia bay as everything comes to a head for the finale.

Having a whale of a time.... Get it because... Because of the, forget it.

Twists hardly work in gaming and are about as predictable as a Ubisoft game having tower climbing, narratives rarely get enough attention for surprises to take hold, however this episode has a corker. In fact, reflecting on previous events my whole perspective has been twisted, contorting like Max herself had rewound time and adjusted my memories. It fits, amazingly so that you'll question how you never picked up on the red flags throughout, there's some disturbing implications here.

The visuals, music and writing meld perfectly together, highlighting its defining moments. At heart 'LIS' is a story about finding yourself, talents and friendships. DontNod have given us something memorable, a game that I believe will have a genuine affect on a good portion of people. Reflecting on real events and our morality through this medium should be applauded; life can be harsh, life can be uplifting... Life Can Be Strange.
